You'll love Black Swan - I've seen it three times, I can't imagine anything topping it for me this year. Part Polanksi, Part Argento, Mostly Aronofsky - it's stunning...the last act is brilliant.
VERY anxious to check it out...have heard soooo many great things...
Did you see Enter the Void or Carlos? I am watching Carlos again (all 5 hours or it) and it's just remarkable. And I cannot wait to see Enter the Void again and again. So bummed it never played theatrically in my area.
If I weren't terribly ill, I'd be seeing "The Fighter" and "How Do You Know" today. Gonna have to wait.
So how were "Tron: Legacy" and "The Fighter"? The former is awesome, the latter I'm seeing Monday or Tuesday.
The Fighter was a total triumph. Bale is worth all the hype but Whalberg is every bit his equal. It's the least idiosyncratic movie that David O. Russell has directed but switching it up a bit for thematically and stylistically was probably a good move. It's a very solid film on all fronts in my estimation. I'll have a full review up soon.
Tron was only a'ight for me. The score was ridiculously amazing (I'll be buying it this week)and the overall design aspects of the movie were very unique and eye-catching, but overall, the movie didn't do a ton for me. Olivia Wilde is very hot and easy to watch but I thought Garrett Hedlun was average at best, and while it was fun to see Bridges hamming it up, everything had a weightless/soulless quality. Maybe that was the point but something tells me it wasn't. This is Joseph Kosinski's first film and it clearly showed. The dialogue was painfully on the nose and the multiple/endless scenes of exposition make similar scenes in Michael Bay's films look like quiet moments in an Antonioni film. It's the kind of movie were bong hits or a nice tab of blotter acid would improve everything. All that said, I was never bored, the sound design was fucking tremendous, and there were enough money shots for me to recommend it to sci-fi fans. The blue/black/gray color design with the swatches of neon orange and yellow were very interesting and unlike anything I've ever seen. It's just that the whole endeavor seemed more like a piece of video/concept art than a fully fleshed-out feature film.
Black Swan is a **** masterpiece.
AGREED about "Black Swan." Completely. It's my #2 film of the year, and I've thought of little else since I saw it.
I see "The Fighter" tomorrow with a friend and cannot fucking wait.
It's going to be next to impossible to not think about Swan for the rest of the week. Perversely brilliant.
I think you'll like The Fighter. It's very good.
Also, had a huge surprise...the Tree of Life trailer ran in front of Black Swan. WOWOWOWOWOW....
