MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

Loved Knight & Day -- it's a classic summer movie. Great action (if a little too much CGI at times), some funny lines, and two terrific "movie-star" performances from Cruise and Diaz. It's not a brilliant film by any means, but as far as these things go, it hits the right notes and doesn't overstay its welcome. Director James Mangold (Cop Land, Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma) enjoys hopscotching from genre to genre, and for his first summer action flick, he did a bang-up job. Yes the movie is silly, yes it's totally ridiculous, but in this instance (as opposed to something like The A-Team) I was able to suspend my disbelief and enjoy the film as a work of pure, escapist entertainment.

Not sure if I'll see anything else this weekend -- still really want to see Get Him to the Greek. And I need to re-watch Toy Story 1 & 2 before seeing part 3.

From Netflix is the romantic drama Remember Me.

NO FACEBOOK FOR ME...

...but I'd happily see a movie about its creation, especially one that's directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin & Steven Zaillian.

TODAY'S BLU IS GREEN

For me, Green Zone is the best film I've seen so far in 2010. I haven't seen many movies this year for any number of reasons (time, interest, quality, etc.), but I thought that Green Zone delivered in a big-time way. Paul Greengrass is an artist specializing in the chaotic and frantic, and his films deliver a visceral quality that few other working filmmakers are currently achieving. I applaud his desire to keep his films topical and socially relevant while still being fully entertaining without any preaching, and I love his propulsive visual style that always keeps your adrenalin flowing. This film was met with mostly solid reviews but horrendous box office -- hopefully it finds a well-deserved second life on Blu Ray.

Here are the movies I've seen from 2010, in order of preference:
Green Zone
Shutter Island
Robin Hood
Kick-Ass
Iron Man 2
The Losers
Macgruber
Youth in Revolt
Alice in Wonderland
The A-Team
Here's a list of already released films (either wide or limited) that I plan to catch up with on Blu Ray: Clash of the Titans, How to Train Your Dragon, Brooklyn's Finest, Toy Story 3, Date Night, The Book of Eli, Greenberg, Repo Men, Wolfman, Edge of Darkness, The Killer Inside Me (available on demand, will be catching it soon), Hot Tub Time Machine, Get Him to the Greek, The Crazies, Remember Me (shipping today from Netflix), Killers (just for you, Joel :), Splice, The Ghost Writer, Chloe, The Runaways, Exit through the Gift Shop, A Prophet, Jonah Hex, Ondine (available on demand, will be catching it soon), Solitary Man, Micmacs, Mother, The Art of the Steal, Winter's Bone, Fish Tank, The Square.
I plan on checking out Knight & Day this Thursday on my day-off.

JUST PRE-ORDERED IT

MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

If I see something in the theaters this weekend, it'll be the Saturday night sneak preview of Knight & Day, the new Tom Cruise/James Mangold action-thriller-comedy. Looks very slick and entertaining and Cruise looks like he's having a blast. He's still one of my all-time favorite people to watch up on the big screen. That'll never change.

No burning-up-inside-desire to see Toy Story 3. It looks cute and fun and harmless but I'm in no rush.

Jonah Hex has been lambasted by pretty much everybody, so as much as I'd like to see an undead-Deadwood with Brolin and Fox and Malkovich, I'll wait for the Blu Ray.

Still need to see Get Him to the Greek. And still want to see Splice. Hope to see 'em both before they leave theaters.

The A-Team is barely worth writing about -- a total piece of shit. Major disappointment from Joe Carnahan.

From Netflix is the supposedly dark Michael Cera comedy Youth in Revolt. Finally watched Easier with Practice earlier this week -- what a disturbing little flick that was...

OLD-SCHOOL STYLE & CLASS

This film looks ultra-sleek and very, very strong.

MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

It's moving weekend. Life in the new house starts this weekend.

Next week, one night after work, I will treat myself to the insanity that is The A-Team. As I mentioned before, I think the film looks blissfully deranged. Can't wait to see things explode real good. I'm a big fan of Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin' Aces, BMW Film Series)

Still need to see Get Him to the Greek -- next week fo show.

ICONS

If you're a man, and you're not at the very least mildly excited/curious/interested in Sly Stallone's The Expendables, then there's something wrong with you. I'd actually have to ask you to check in between your legs just to be sure...

MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

Lots going on with the new house over the next few weeks so I'm not quite sure what my theater-going availability will be. I will definitely see Get Him to the Greek, hopefully at some point this weekend or early next week. Looks like a pisser. Splice looks pretty sweet but that'll be saved for Blu Ray. Killers looks atrocious. I won't even consider Marmaduke.

From Netflix is the indie drama Easier with Practice.

I am stoked for The A-Team next weekend -- looks mentally retarded but in a wonderful way.
