MICHAEL MANN. JOHNNY DEPP. CHRISTIAN BALE.

Say it again. Michael Mann. Johnny Depp. Christian Bale.

Per Variety:

"Christian Bale is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in Michael Mann's upcoming 'Public Enemies.' According to a person familiar with the situation, Bale will play Melvin Purvis, the legendary FBI agent who led the manhunt for John Dillinger. Depp is starring as Dillinger in the pic, which is set up at Universal and is slated to begin production in March (Daily Variety, Dec. 6). Mann is producing via his Forward Pass banner, with Kevin Misher and his Misher Films. Jane Rosenthal of Tribeca is exec producing."

Holy shit. Are tickets available for sale yet?

I just came over here to post you a note about this news and of course you already had the post up. Um, yeah. "Holy Shit" pretty much says it all. Bale is quickly becoming one of my favorites, and can do no wrong, although I'm highly sceptical of a McG Terminator 4, I hope he drops out of that. And Depp and Mann working together could not be cooler. I'm tired of Depp being "quirky" and doing Tim Burton movies. This is the perfect project for him. Just perfect...the thought of Mann doing a movie about Depression-era gangsters blows the mind...

I cannot wait for this movie to come out. Can't get here soon enough. Yes, the mind reels when thinking about a Michael Mann directed Depression-era crime film.

I too am skeptical of T4, simply because of McG's involvement. But, judging from his previous choices, Bale RARELY "takes a paycheck," so the script must be great. Right? We'll see...

And while I am happy to see anything that Depp and Burton do together, I too am excited to see Depp step away from the theatrics of the Pirates films and Sweeney Todd (again, loved him in all of those movies) and do something more reality based. His work in Donnie Brasco, if you recall, was mesmerizing. One of his best and most underrated performances.

Please fellows...Johnny Depp as Dillenger? Absurd. Viggo Mortensen, Clive Owen, Jason Stratham maybe, but girly-boy Depp will be out of his league.

At this point, I think Depp is capable of any role out there. And if he's good enough for Michael Mann...well...he's good enough for me.

There's so much potential here....

Yes...and Mann wrote the screenplay as well...

I actually just watched a History Channel documentary about Dillinger, Purvis, Hoover, Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelley and George Nelson (complete with *awful* re-enactments) and it should be a pretty good film.

I can't wait to see Mann's view of the 30's. There won't be any of his cool eyeglasses, but it should be somethin'.
