MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

I plan on seeing the new noir crime thriller IN BRUGES this weekend. I also have last year's Beatles musical ACROSS THE UNIVERSE on dvd. I also have last year's independent high school satire ROCKET SCIENCE to check out on dvd.

Really looking forward to IN BRUGES. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars and here's a link to his review:

Manohla Dargis in the New York Times (one of my other favorite critics) seemed to really like it as well. Here's her review:

I love stylish, dark, R-rated gangster thrillers like SNATCH, LOCK, STOCK & TWO SMOKING BARRELS, LAYER CAKE, SEXY BEAST, etc. I am hoping that IN BRUGES lives up to those titles above.

I just finished watching Bulworth. It fucking rules and so does Beatty, I wish he's make another film.

yes, Bulworth is a masterpiece, saw it opening day with my parents and have watched it at least 10 times since. So funny, so smart, so honest, so outrageous. Great cinematography as well.

Watched Across the Universe and Feast of Love on dvd this weekend; both were good but flawed. Didn't make it to In Bruges this weekend...next weekend for sure.

I was stunned by the audacity of the ending in particular. In Ebert's review he says he dislikes the ending. To me that was Beatty saying, screw the b.o., I'm gonna try and make a classic here. I can't think of a more fascinating figure in Hollywood than Beatty. It's so frustrating that he makes a film about once a decade, but that's a big part of the aura, he has that Kubrick/Malick/Daniel Day-Lewis mystery thing going on.

Yes, the ending is a big part of why the film is so great. As much as I love Ebert, sometimes, I wanna smack him around a little bit. Beatty certainly has that aura and mystery. Have you ever seen The Parallax View? If not, you should.
