One thing I realized I'm excited about this year - my favorite film of the year, No Country, has a good shot at winning Best Picture. I don't remember that ever happening before. Throughout the 90s I always loved the Best Picture winner, even if it wasn't my single favorite film of the year. In the 2000s movies I couldn't care less about that wouldn't have cracked my top 20 have been winning Best Picture. So it will be nice if my #1 film of the year wins.
Last year, when Marty finally won, and then The Departed took best picture, I finally felt some personal-favorite joy while watching the show. Children of Men was the "best" film of last year, but The Departed was my "favorite," if that makes any sense. Sort of like how Diving Bell is the "best" film of this year, but Jesse James was my "favorite."
This year, I will be happy if any of the nominated films win, except for Juno, which I don't think deserves a place among the top 5 films of the year, especially when stuff like Zodiac, Diving Bell, Jesse James, and Into the Wild got snubbed. I have been watching No Country (which is perfect) and There Will Be Blood (which is masterful in every way) throughout the last two weeks and I'd be very pleased if one of those were to take it. Conversely, if Clayton were to steal it, I'd be very pleased with that as well. It was such a tight, entertaining, and smartly put together 70's style moral thriller that never gets made any more. I am going to try and post a piece about 2007 later today; it was the best year I've ever had at the movies.
