MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

Nothing in the theaters this weekend. Family in town and looking at houses to buy...

Clash of the Titans looks silly and potentially entertaining. However, I've heard that the 3-D conversion resulted in a muddy, awful looking film, so if/when I see it theatrically, I'll see it in good old-fashioned 2-D. Unless a movie has been shot for 3-D, converting just seems like a gimmick to make more money at the box office.

I'm still waiting for Greenberg to open in my area...

From Netflix I have Alexander the Last.

Arriving any day is Collateral Blu Ray from Amazon -- big-time right there...

I saw two movies on Wednesday: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "The Last Song."

The former was actually fantastic: really, really funny and savvy about fifth grade life. Don't you remember it? The "cootie" thing going in and out of style, and all girls seeming like aliens? Yeah, it captures that brilliantly. Scatological humor? It's there, but you can't really expect it not to be.

"The Last Song" was actually kind of...okay. Not an original bone in its body, obviously a tearjerker, but the last forty minutes are its bread and butter and more effective than it has a right to be. The romance is floppy and obvious, but the father-daughter aspect kept it above water, if only barely.

And I also watched a great romantic comedy I happened across yesterday: "Kissing Jessica Stein." It's a really, really sweet lesbian romcom indie from a few years ago. It's been up for grabs remake-wise, but I don't think Hollywood should get a hold of it, really. The ending is perfectly written and the characters deserve what happens, and it would be changed up for the hell of it by nutjobs. Unless, say, the writers of "(500) Days of Summer" tackled it. Or something.

LOVE JESSICA STEIN -- glad you discovered it.

The Last Song a'int my cup-o-tea and Diary seems cute/innocent enough that when it hits HBO I might check it out. I read some good stuff about it.

I have been watching my Collateral Blu Ray more times than any normal, sane person would...
