MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

Sadly, I'll be waiting for The Tourist to hit Blu Ray as opposed to seeing it in the theater.  I just can't bring myself to spend $16 on a movie that has a Rottentomatoes score of less than 30% (as of last night).  And to be honest, there's no fucking excuses as to why the extremely talented group of Depp, Jolie, director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others), and writers Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) & Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, The Young Victoria) couldn't and shouldn't have knocked this type of supposed entertainment outta the park.  Set in Italy with Jolie acting all sorts of extra-hot-glamorous and Depp playing a "regular-joe" for the first time in eons, I was really excited to get whisked away by some international intrigue and speed-boat chases.  I guess not this time.

From Netflix is Olivier Assayas's (Carlos, Boarding Gate, Irma Vep) French family drama Summer HoursCarlos is a masterpiece, and the second best film from 2010, so it's now my mission to track down all of Assayas's previous films unseen by me and give them a watch; those titles include: Clean, Demonlover, Les Destinees, and Late August, Early September.

Next week will be a busy one: Black Swan (fucking-A-finally!), The Fighter, and Tron: Legacy in
3-D/Imax.

The negative hype about "The Tourist" (which I saw at a screening last night) is absolutely correct. It all hinges around a final-act twist that makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE and leaves whatever came before it in shambles. Sad failure.

Oh and I see "Yogi Bear" tomorrow morning via screening(ugh), "Black Swan" and "Tron: Legacy" on Monday (the latter, again, via screening) and "True Grit" on Tuesday via, yes, screening. I actually gave up a screening of "The Fighter" to go see the Coens' latest, which I would say is a fair trade, considering I will be seeing "The Fighter" three days later anyway.

Saw "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," which is obviously not your cup of tea. I enjoyed it, but it's nothing brilliant.

How do you get into all of these screenings?

LOL. A local website called Gordon and the Whale gives contests for early screenings that are remarkably easy to win passes for.

"Yogi Bear" was atrocious. Just awful.

"Black Swan" is incredible. Still taking it in.

Seeing "Tron: Legacy in a couple of hours. I'll let you know what I think.

Can't wait for the Swan...

All I expect from Tron is stony visuals...

"Tron: Legacy" is this year's "Avatar." Incredible. Was not expecting it to be that engrossing in a narrative sense.

Cool! Looking forward!

"True Grit"=AWESOME.

I'd say it's his fourth knockout in as many years, even though I'm SLIGHTLY less enthusiastic with my four stars than I was for his other three recent pictures. It's more classic Western than classic Coen, so in the face of those previous three, it's a bit lesser.

Still, it's superb. Bridges, Damon and young Steinfeld are great, and Brolin and Pepper have a couple scenes between them and leave a huge impression. You won't be disappointed.

I can't wait to see what Roger Deakins as done with the lighting/cinematography in True Grit. Glad you loved it!

It's easily some of the best cine work of the year, ESPECIALLY during nighttime or winter sequences. Good old Roger Deakins. You can always count on him. (Although I stick by Mantle and Chediak's work on "127 Hours," Libatique's on "Black Swan" and Cronenweth's on "The Social Network" as being better and more Oscar-friendly. Not a put-down, since I definitely see it as a nominee. But the quality of the others remains higher, I think.)

Deakins is sooooooo over due at this point...
