ANTICIPATION

The marketing blitz for Watchmen is now in full swing. The film hits theaters in a few weeks (on 3/6) and the early word from long-lead press screenings has been...well...mixed. I have never read the graphic novel that Zack Snyder's film is based on -- I just can't get into reading comics or graphic novels. That being said, I am extremely excited to see this film. I am a huge fan of Snyder's previous work (his hardcore remake of Dawn of the Dead and the gloriously stylish 300) and from the footage in the trailers that I have seen thus far for Watchmen, I am quite anxious to see what he's cooked up. Anticipation is building. What will fans of the graphic novel think? How big will the film be at the box office? Will the hard-R rating hurt the film? Will there be a lot of curious non-fans of the graphic novel who will check the film out based on the trippy trailers? It's the first big "event" movie of 2009 and I am really hoping that it's a lot of fun.

I'm not a regular comic/graphic novel reader, but I've read this, and I adore it.

I've watched the clips that have been out this week.....and I'm not really hopeful. I hope seeing them out of context is the issue.

I'm mixed on Snyder. Loved the zombies. Did not care for 300 in the least.

at the very least, it should be a stunning visual experience in the IMAX format.

I don't really know what to expect from the story, and I am not watching any of the out-of-context-clips, as I want to keep it all as fresh as possible. The trailers have done their trick.

I think that Snyder has an intense visual eye and amazing sense of style. He hasn't yet worked with a deep or layered screenplay. Maybe Watchmen will be a good bit of both. Everyone talks about how incredible and cerebral the narrative of Watchmen is, and all Snyder keeps saying is how faithful he remained to the source material, so...

There's alot of material to cover with "Watchmen". Hopefully, he can cool it with the slo-mo.

I might just be bitter that Paul Greengrass didn't end up doing the film. Love that guy's work.

Well, knowing what we know about Snyder's tendencies thus far, I think it's safe to assume that there will be lots of slow-mo. But, I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing.

Yes, Greengrass doing this film would have been very interesting. It would have been cool to see a "shaky-cam" superhero movie, but that's basically what we got with Hancock, a film that I have heard people say borrowed from Watchmen in more than one instance.

We will be getting a new film from Greengrass this year, so at least there's that.

Oh yeah! Forgot about "Green Zone"! Is there any buzz yet?

Haven't heard anything -- good or bad -- on Green Zone yet. I know he based the film on a highly respected book, and the cast is stellar (Damon, Kinnear, Gleeson, Isaacs, Amy Ryan). Brian Helgeland wrote the script and Greengrass's United 93 cinematographer shot the flick.

I can't imagine Greengrass fucking up an Iraq war thriller.

You should read the graphic novel. It's different than most. And I think the movie will be a masterpiece. Can't wait.
