MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

I'll be seeing The Informant! on Saturday afternoon. Really looking forward.

On Saturday I should be getting Lymelife from Netflix.

I just picked up the recent DVD release of Observe and Report so I'm guessing I'll watch this deranged masterwork from start to finish at some point over the next few days.

Surrogates looks kinda cool, but aspects of it look...I don't know...a bit off. We'll have to see. In the weeks leading up to its release I've read/heard nothing (good or bad) about it. I love Willis, I love sci-fi, the director is the solid Jonathan Mostow (T3, Breakdown), and the special effects look slick. If anyone checks it out, let me know what you think...

Fame might be a guilty pleasure...when it hits DVD...unless my wife reeeaaallly wants to see it on the big screen :)

I'm not seeing anything from this weekend tomorrow, actually. Instead, I'm seeing the romantic drama "Love Happens," which I am embarrassed to be REALLY looking forward to. I'll let you know.

Then I'm having a big get-together with my parents and few relatives and finally seeing "The Soloist," which I sadly missed on the first go-round.

"Surrogates" on the 16th for me, same day as "Where the Wild Things Are." That'll be interesting. Haven't really heard anything about it either, since it smartly (read: stupidly) wasn't screened for critics. "Fame" in a few weeks, maybe. Looks pretty energetic.

Tell me how "Lymelife" is. I've been interested in that one since January's Sundance coverage revealed it as a tiny gem. Looks really strong.

I still need to see "Observe and Report" REALLY REALLY badly. Looks fucking hilarious and deranged. Actually for some weird, possibly masochistic reason I haven't figured out yet, I want to watch that and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and compare the two. I know. Strange...

Got my Observe and Report in from Netflix on Tuesday. I liked it when I saw it in the theatre...but didn't love it.

I've now given it about 3 more viewings on DVD, and seriously...this movie is amazing.

I think during the first viewing I was just taken aback at how dark the whole thing can be. It definitely stands up to multiple viewings. Fantastically deranged movie. Best dark comedy since Bad Santa.

Nick, this is completely off the topic, but I can't stop thinking about it...

"Modern Family" is the funniest show I've ever seen. Funnier than "The Office" (which I didn't think could happen). Funnier than "Monk" (if you've seen it, you know that that's a feat; if you haven't seen it, why not?). Funnier than any on and off episode of "30 Rock" and "Arrested Development" that I've seen (which is only a few, but they were awesome). Funnier than "Seinfeld" on a good day. Funnier than those old corny sitcoms, like "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" or "Boy Meets World" that you watch and laugh your ass off. I'll go out on a limb and say that it's the funniest show ever made, even if I've not seen all the funny shows out there.

The reason for this is that I've never laughed more than at least 40 times at one episode of a sitcom, whether it be a half or full hour. That is, until I decided to watch "Modern Family," which got at least 75 or 80 laughs for (whether they be the heartiest guffaws or the smallest chuckles) in 30. fucking. minutes. It could be revolutionary for sitcom TV. You should check it out, and if you like it (you will, trust me) you MUST add it on your queue to watch. It's only had one episode thus far, which is available on Hulu and IMDb. The BEST comedic writing of any show I've ever seen. And I'm aware that you think "Eastbound & Down" is your favorite comedy right now. I dunno. But chances are, "Modern Family" is funnier.

End rant. Just had to tell ya.
