I'll be away until Sunday so no new updates until next week. Not sure if I'll be able to make it to the theaters, but if I do, there's plenty of things to pick from.
Turns out I might be seeing "The Blind Side" after all with a friend from my school in Indiana who popped into Dallas for a visit. She wants to see it, so I'll give it a chance.
I do want to see "Ninja Assassin" as it looks to be great trash. Sure, the script will be terrible, but IT'S CALLED "NINJA ASSASSIN." A redundantly-titled movie calls for a suspension of disbelief. It could be a fun flick.
And today, I had the sudden, overwhelming, slightly freaky urge to look at the trainwreck called "Old Dogs." I know, I know, shocking, but I've seen so many great movies recently that I almost want to see a bad one just to sort of make sure that garbage is being produced. Sort of like why I saw "Bratz."
I'll keep you updated by way of this comment thread. Have a good one!
All right, so..."The Blind Side." What a terrible movie. I mean, Sandra Bullock is terrific and everything, and she's bound to get a Globe nod. But the film around her feels false in nearly every way possible. I could hardly believe the same director made "The Rookie," which was certainly manipulative (no getting around that), but in all the right ways. "The Blind Side" had maybe two scenes in 129 minutes that felt real. Everything else felt calculated and done a million times over. It's like a Disneyfied version of "Precious."
I know that I'm bombarding your message board but I would hope that that's okay. :P Hope you're having a great Thanksgiving wherever you are.
I saw "Old Dogs" today. Hideous. Absolutely hideous. Virtually unreleasable. I'll be writing a snarky review of it, but then I'm not sure words are enough. I thought "Wild Hogs" was perfectly adequate. Not successful by any means, but perfectly accessible and quite amusing at times. But "Old Dogs" is a different matter. Just unrelentingly awful.
Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Joel. Hope you had a great Turkey Day. And thanks for keeping me posted on your movie viewings.
At this point, I want to see what all the fuss is about with The Blind Side. It does feel very TV-movie from the trailers, but I too am a big John Lee Hancock fan. Disappointing to hear your comments, though.
I'll never see Old Dogs. Never :) But I do get the urge to watch shitty movies from time to time.
Ninja Assassin looks pretty bad, but I'm sure I'll rent it at some point.
I didn't get a chance to see anything over the holiday, but I'll be seeing Fantastic Mr. Fox and Brothers next weekend, and I am desperately awaiting the release of Bad Lieutenant and The Road in my area. I simply cannot wait to see those two.
