MOVIES FOR THE WEEKEND

Double feature Saturday -- Your Highness in the afternoon and Hanna at night.  Both look sweet.

From Netflix, I think I'll have Get Low or Fish Tank shipping today.  Not sure which one.  I just sent back I Love You Phillip Morris, which was basically a small masterpiece of dark, deranged comedy.  Look for a full review soon.

Doing a double feature of "Arthur" and "Your Highness" tomorrow evening. Seeing "Soul Surfer" in a bit (hey, inspirational stuff is all right sometimes...). "Hanna" is up in the air. Completely unsure when that'll happen, but my dad wants to see it and he's busy for the next 5 days.

And I enjoyed "Soul Surfer." It is IMPOSSIBLE to believe that the film came from the guy who made "Bratz." They're in different hemispheres. You'll call me crazy, but it exists in the same milieu and universe as "127 Hours." Both are films about lost limbs that translate to a spiritual experience (one directly with the Christian God, the other indirectly) and both are moving, if on completely different levels. "Soul Surfer" is working on the level of an inspirational entertainment for the entire family to watch, and it's certainly gooey, but that doesn't make it bad.

Your Highness was total stoner idiocy. Loved every second of it. And REALLY loved the Ghostbusters-style special effects.

And I really, really enjoyed "Hanna," though the screenplay needs a rewrite. There are questions left unanswered, but in the way of craft, it does no wrong. The score by the Chemical Brothers is like Hans Zimmer filtered through psycho hip-hop. The cinematography and editing are intoxicating (some framing of sequences reminds of "Let the Right One In," to be honest). But the flaws are undeniable for me. I won't give anything away, but the plot doesn't quite hold to scrutiny.

Seeing "Your Highness" this perhaps.

Whoops. This EVENING. I just skip words too much.

Not gonna get to Hanna tonight but definitely next week. It looks very good.

I hated "Your Highness." Just got out of it. A couple funny moments, but oof, tough sit. Not nearly as clever as it wanted to be (even in terms of lunacy), Natalie Portman looked bored, the constant and non-stop sex jokes were tired. Some nice scenery and cool F/X, but it sucks all the identity of David Gordon Green's filmmaking.

Ouch. I totally get that many people will be turned off by the unique comedy stylings of McBride and David Gordon Green. As I mentioned, I totally dug it.

Just got out of Hanna -- best movie of the year so far. It's not perfect (one major plot point is definitely up for debate...) but the filmmaking itself was so dynamic that I could have cared less about any potential plot holes. Ronan was fucking incredible, Blanchett was wonderfully nasty, and Bana, as always, was rock-solid. Full review soon...

Oh, trust me, I couldn't have cared less about the awful reviews "Your Highness" was getting. I was SERIOUSLY looking forward to it. And a Danny McBride/James Franco pairing can never be a complete waste (in fact, Franco was pretty good), but use penis jokes SPARINGLY not all.the.freaking.time. If they would have written it with the savvy that "Pineapple Express" was (a masterpiece of stoner comedy, and also a graphically violent thriller, which is an element a lot of people ignore) or the even more diseased "Observe and Report," then I'd have been much happier with it. It had the elements (bad-taste comedy, graphic violence [boy, was it graphic!], star power, stoner lunacy) but the execution of those elements came together into something pitiful. Again, it's just me. I'm not THAT surprised you (or anyone) liked it.

I agree with you wholeheartedly -- Pineapple and Observe were waaaay better movies. I just found Your Highness to be so silly and ludicrous (and funny) that it was impossible for me to get to pissed over the fact that it was a mostly sloppy exercise in stoner-flavored filmmaking. I am sure Green will do something more serious with the upcoming The Sitter, which, on paper, has all the makings of a great action-comedy.
